"SEO included." "We'll get you to the top of Google." "First-page rankings guaranteed." These phrases sell a lot of websites and a lot of monthly retainers. They also lean on a thing most business owners don't know — and have no reason to know — which is that nobody controls Google's rankings. Not your developer, not the agency, not the most expensive SEO firm in the world. So a guarantee of rankings is a guarantee of a thing the seller can't actually deliver.
SEO — search engine optimization — is real and worth doing. It's the work of making your site easy for search engines to understand and genuinely useful to the people searching. But Google's ranking system is a private, constantly-changing algorithm that weighs thousands of signals and updates thousands of times a year. You can do everything right and influence your odds. You cannot purchase a position. Anyone promising one is promising something outside their control.
That second row is the favorite trick. A firm "guarantees first-page results," hits the target, and shows you the report — for a phrase like "artisan candle shop east Asheville family-owned" that exactly three people have ever searched. The ranking is real and worth nothing. The guarantee was technically met and practically empty.
You can guarantee a ranking, or you can guarantee it's worth having — never both. The easiest promises to keep are the ones that buy you nothing.
The two ways a guarantee gets "met"
When someone does promise rankings and appears to deliver, it's usually one of two things, and both can cost you:
- Worthless keywords. Ranking you for terms with no real search traffic — technically first-page, practically invisible. The number looks like success and changes nothing about your actual customers.
- Black-hat shortcuts. Tricks that game the algorithm for a quick bump — spammy links, hidden text, bought signals. They can work briefly, then get your site penalized or removed from search entirely when Google catches them. You inherit the damage after the firm is paid.
Google's own guidance to business owners is blunt about this: if someone guarantees they can get you to number one, that's a reason to walk away, not to sign. Real SEO doesn't sell certainty because there isn't any to sell.
What honest SEO actually looks like
The real work is unglamorous and entirely legitimate — and it overlaps almost completely with just building a good, clean, fast site, which is the thread running through this whole hub.
Honest SEO sells
- A fast, clean, well-structured site search engines can read
- Genuinely useful content that answers real questions
- Clear strategy and an audit of what's holding you back
- Transparency about what's in their control and what isn't
- Realistic timelines — results take months, not days
Hollow SEO sells
- Guaranteed rankings or "#1 on Google"
- Secret methods they won't explain
- Instant results, "first page in a week"
- Vague monthly fees with no reporting on what's done
- Pressure and fear — "you're invisible without us"
Notice that the honest column is mostly just quality: a fast site, clear structure, useful content. Much of "good SEO" is the same thing as a well-built site that respects the visitor — which means if your foundation is clean, you're already most of the way there, without buying certainty from anyone.
The questions that separate real from hollow
Of any "SEO included" or SEO-services pitch, ask:
- What specifically does "SEO included" cover — actual work, or a few settings filled in?
- Do you guarantee rankings? (If yes, that's your answer — nobody honestly can.)
- Which keywords, and do real people actually search them — or just look impressive in a report?
- What's your method, and will you explain it plainly — or is it "secret"?
- What timeline is realistic, and what will you show me each month about what was actually done?
If the answers are specific, transparent, and free of guarantees, you've found someone honest. If there's a promised number-one and a method they won't explain, now you know — the certainty was the product, and certainty was never theirs to sell. That's not a disaster, just clarity about what you're really buying.
